After McDonald’s had a successful run with its Nasi Lemak Burger, we can expect many other versions coming up.
Singapore food businesses copy quite fast lah.
While many commented that the Nasi Lemak Burger was one of the best localised burgers that the fast food chain has introduced recently, others thought that it could do better with a rice patty burger, and more kick in the sambal chilli. (I had the NLB once and thought it was just okay.)
Here comes The Beast off Arab Street, at Jalan Klapa.
The bistro-bar known for its Southern specialities such as Southern Fried Chicken, Chicken & Waffles, Mac & Cheese Burger, Freshly Baked Cornbread, Bourbon Pecan Pie, has gone on to create its version of Nasi Lemak Burger.
This is in conjunction with the National Day month of August, when Southern dishes with a local twist is introduced.
These include The Beast Nasi Lemak Burger, Salted Egg Yolk Chicken & Pandan Waffles, and Beef Rendang Cheese Fries, available for a limited period.
Take note: I was informed these special food items would only be available dinner service. (Went for brunch initially and they didn’t have it.)
The Beast Nasi Lemak Burger ($20)
This Nasi Lemak Burger contained actual nasi (rice) compared to the other one. Opps.
When it arrived, I marvelled at the portion, and realised that my last hour at the gym would just go to waste.
On the wooden board was southern fried chicken thigh smothered with house-made sambal topped with a runny egg, sandwiched between deep fried fragrant coconut rice “buns”, served with a side of luncheon meat fries.
Here’s what they got right.
The coconut rice burgers were sedap, with that obvious coconut milk taste. Deep fried after battered with specially made crumbs, the outer layer was crisp, while the inside was still slighly moist.
And the buns were not overly oily. Bravo.
I only found that the rice patties could be slighly thick, and would be less rich and filling a few mm was shaved off its thickness.
The sambal spread on thick, juicy chicken worked – the sauce wasn’t overly spicy, and contained soft, caramelised onions. I wished for more sambal to go with the fries. Give more in a separate small container?
The luncheon meat fries were thick, chunky, totally addictive, though unarguably salty. I guess that balanced with the rice burgers.
I think this is a good-enough-to-try version, and sharing is highly recommended.
Here are the other items to expect:
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken & Pandan Waffles ($20)
Salted egg yolk chicken served on a crisp pandan waffle with a side of creamy milk sauce.
Beef Rendang Cheese Fries ($14)
Fries topped with secret rendang recipe and oozy mozzarella cheese.
Pandan Arnold Palmer ($6)
Pandan infused lemonade with southern sweet tea.
Yum Seng to SG52 ($56, usual price $66)
All 3 dishes + 2 pandan arnold palmers all in one set.
