If I get my own place one day, I imagine it to be decorated in MUJI. Should be getting one of the denim sofa and oak wood dining table.
So MUJI has (finally) opened its first flagship store at Plaza Singapura, which is more than its usual retail store.
Of course, many MUJI fans – the “Mujirers”, and families have quickly descended there over the weekends.
It houses a new merchandise line from series such as Found MUJI, IDÉE and MUJI Labo, a gallery event space called “Open MUJI concept”, embroidery station, interior consultation services, and a Café&Meal MUJI which can seat 70 diners.
For those new to the Café MUJI concept, you first queue to get a metallic reservation plate to secure a seat, before ordering your food.
I find that this helps individuals dining alone, so that your table is reserved, in Singaporean’ terms – “choped”.
The two exclusive items to Plaza Singapura are the Pork Katsu Donburi ($15.90) and Cheese Baked Butter Curry Rice ($17.90).
I preferred the former, and found the Pork Katsu somewhat crispy even though it was served in a canteen-style restaurant.
The pieces were drizzled with Japanese Mayonnaise and Tonkatsu sauce, and paired with mixed leafy greens, onsen egg over 16 grain rice.
The Cheese Baked Rice contained Mozzarella cheese au gratin over butter curry chicken and 16 grain rice.
While I like this style of sweetish-mild-spicy Japanese curry, the chicken pieces were inconsistent, as some were too dry.
Feeling like I needed more greens, I ordered a Triple Nut Roasted Pumpkin and Capsicum Salad, and ‘Thick’ Omelette with Japanese-style Mushroom.
Those unfortunately looked nothing like the photos, and paying $2.80 for a few leaves and nuts made my heart ache a little. Café MUJI, can give a few more leaves in future?
As what some Singaporeans would say, this is expensive chye png.
Some of the service staff were really trying their best though, despite the queue, so kudos to them.
The flagship store has incorporated some of Japan’s elements, including an exhibition open space, new merchandise line, and wider range of furniture items.
With that said, there is always a sense of peace and tranquillity at MUJI Tokyo, even if the entire place was always full. Packed but quiet.
This MUJI felt like another IKEA to me. Cannot be helped? I got a little ‘upset’ when I walked in seeing a pile of clothes messily on the floor. Perhaps we could do our little part as customers as well.
Perhaps the Singapore outlet had to deal with space constraints, and tried to pack in too many elements and items. Minimalist lifestyle? Irony much?
The draw of MUJI to many is in its design aesthetics and easy-going-charm, and I wonder how the less-is-more can be applied more effectively to this flagship store.
I will likely pay a few more visits, more likely during the weekdays. Perhaps get a denim cap and cushion cover. Sofa has to wait.
