The Italian restaurant in Singapore that earned quite positive reviews late is Osteria Art, by restaurateur Beppe De Vito who is also behind il Lido, Latteria Mozzarella Bar, and &Sons.
Osteria Art seem to tick the right boxes – a convenient location within CBD at Raffles Place Market Street; classy décor with fine-dining restaurant flair; professional service (especially somewhat tougher to find in Singapore) and reasonably priced Italian cuisine.
Add a touch of glamour.
There are three things I would like to highlight first.
Perhaps the encouraging recommendations created a higher than usual expectation. We ordered a $32 ‘Power Lunch’ which might not provide a fair overview of its standard and potential. And there are indeed many other Italian restaurants in Singapore which do provide quality food.
The 3-course lunch at Osteria Art came with a starter of Pumpkin Soup with Almonds or Seafood & Cherry Tomato Salad; main of Spaghetti Norma with Smoked Cheese, Sea Bass or Lamb T-Bones with Mash Potatoes; and a dessert of Pineapple Cake. With coffee or tea.
Some parts we liked: ingredients tasted fresh, the pasta had an agreeable chewy bite, and price-point was very reasonable.
The main element that could be lacking was the robustness and layering of flavours somewhere, somehow. The fish with zucchini for example, was flat-tasting, too straight-forward, bordering on ordinary. Was there a standout dish? Perhaps not yet.
We foresee Osteria Art would become a favourite dining venue for business lunches, and has certainly far more potential than just this. An elevation in the taste component would be that next step.
