Gelato Labo + Glass Roasters – NEW Ice Cream Cafe With Fresh Tokyo Mochi Waffles, At Mohamed Sultan Road

I remember covering Gelato Labo at Cavan Road (Jalan Besar) at the start of “Phase 2”.

In a blink of an eye, the gelato specialist has opened two more shops – one at Faber Drive and another at Mohamed Sultan Road.

This is in collaboration with GLASS Roasters, so you get the best of both worlds at one place.

The gelato shop is known for churning out small batches in interesting flavours, and use only fresh fruits and source for local and organic ingredients where possible.

What you get include rotating flavours like Yamanashi Peach & Lemongrass, Madagascan Vanilla, Fuji Apple Pie & Cinnamon, Sakura Smoke, Artichoke & Pear Compote, Colombian Cold Brew & Cookie Butter Bits, Watermelon, Mint & Chia Seeds, Navel Orange & White Chrysanthemum Flower, Lychee Raspberry & Rose, and Kyoto Shiso & Yuzu Jelly.

Interesting, right?

In a landscape where there are so MANY NEW Ice Cream & Waffles Cafes in Singapore (with a few being ‘inspired’ by the Michelin-recommended Birds Of Paradise), Gelato Labo does attract some eyeballs.

A premium flavour goes for $5, Gourmet for $6 (ah, there are no ‘basic’ flavours), with a lavender cone at $1.20 extra.

The cone fitted better with a more floral flavour such as the Lychee, Raspberry & Rose, which by the way had a creamy more than sorbet-like texture.

This time I had the Fresh Tokyo Mochi Waffles (additional $6.60) which is again not so commonly seen in Singapore.

Made with nippon flour and mochi, this had a delightful crisp and a slight-sticky and soft inside.

While I initially thought this could have been pretty filling, it was overall not too dense or thick, and paired well with the lightly-flavoured gelato.

The Persimmon & Lemon Jelly had the distinct taste of the fruit, almost reminding you of a tangy-mango but came with its richly sweet quality.

Good stuff, but I would be even happier if the sugar level was slightly lowered down.

As for coffee, it is made using a single origin from Columbia, with the coffee beans are roasted by the barista himself at Glyph Supply Co. This place should pack in the crowd pretty soon.
