Erwin’s Gastrobar, with a flagship outlet at MBFC, has opened its second at the revamped Valley Point. And it occupied such a big space.
This part of River Valley had always been more family and expat-oriented, so it seemed unexpected that an urban concept diner-pub would find itself there. Would that be enough office crowd upstairs, ie the Manulife financial planners, to support the venue?
I did like the vibes. Warm lighting, dark heavy wooden furniture, tall ceilings, and open spaces that would remind you of those swanky after-work bistros at the financial districts of New York and Sydney.
The menu had an old-school New York broadsheet design, with a selection of burgers, sandwiches, pasta, salads and sweets.
We liked the Chicken Wings ($9.50) heavily (and we really mean heavily) dipped in sauces of buffalo, teriyaki glaze or chill salt served with ranch dip. A sinful, finger-licking starter.
The Fish Burger ($17.50) was promising, with crumbed grouper fillet in a soft sesame seed bun, and a zesty sweet spiced mango mayo. The service staff was on-the-ball (perhaps he saw my look of dissatisfaction) and polite to ask, “How’s the food, sir?”
My reply, “The fish was too small.” He said he would convey to the chef.
Weekend brunches are also available, offering ciabatta breakfast rolls, toasties and burgers, supposedly from 10am to 5pm from Saturday to Sunday. I went about 3:30pm on a Sunday, and got answered “Sorry no more brunch”. A pity.
Considering that gastrobars are never quite my first choice of a dinner venue, I felt good being at Erwin’s Gastrobar – friendly service, relaxing ambience and some tasty bar grubs. Can support.
