Shots & Scoops located at PoMo Selegie Road, was inspired by two of the founders’ greatest love – a good cup of coffee and a delicious scoop of ice cream. The shop has replaced cake café Hasu.
Their handcrafted premium ice cream is said to be made using only natural ingredients sans preservatives and artificial sweeteners.
For example, the classic flavours of Vanilla and Chocolate are made from vanilla pods and Valrhona chocolate respectively.
A single scoop goes for $3.80, double for $7.00 and triple for $9.90.
Some ice cream flavours that stood out included Black Sesame, Berry Ripple, Tiramisu, Lavender Stracciatella, as well as Chendol Sorbet and Strawberry Watermelon Sorbet.
The sorbet interestingly appeared to have quite a creamy texture, but I was initially keen to have the Strawberry Watermelon because it was the one flavour that was most unique. However, upon trying, I thought it was slightly sweet and went for the safer options.
I chose the Valrhona 72% Chocolate and signature Lavender Stracciatella – made using real lavender flowers for the natural flavour, and texturised with bittersweet, irregular shavings of chocolate.
My friend enjoyed the Chocolate much more, and thought Lavender was ”too floral”. I commented that it reminded me of spa, and I didn’t quite mind it.
You can pair the ice cream with a variety of waffle cones which includes matcha, red velvet, charcoal and buttermilk, or with Belgian waffles ($4.50) – not expensive.
The Matcha Waffles I had was more to crispier side, and not as doughy on the inside. I could imagine some liking this version.
On another occasion, I had the Black Sesame and you could taste that obvious roasted goma, matched with creamy texture.
I do have two feedbacks for Shots & Scoops though.
The interior might have looked white and bare, and not enticing for young students to even step in. Some appropriate decoration (not cheesy ones), plants, or even dry flowers on tables could soften the touch and add more life to the café.
Students also tend to be more adventurous in terms of ice cream flavours, and they love to try hip and new things. So rather than the safe, tried and tested ones, Shots & Scoops can try going for more unconventional combinations to differentiate themselves from the rest.
Good to know: One of their founders currently runs a learning centre for students with learning difficulties, and hopes to be able to provide employment opportunities for them in time to come.
