If you frequent food bazaars such as Artbox and the Geylang Serai Bazaar, you would have noticed Loco Loco – a churros specialty stall which creates their signature in a variety of localised flavours.
Salted Egg, Chilli Crab, Pandan, Ondeh Ondeh Churros. Loved the last one.
This is a story that hard work paying off. Loco Loco has now a permanent store front at Northpoint, Yishun.
When I visited the kiosk, I was surprised to see that the lady boss was a ‘student-preneur’.
Co-founder Crystal Cheng is still currently studying Business Management at SMU. How does she juggle all that? Why does she find the time? (I wonder what I was doing during Year 2 uni.)
The story of Loco Loco started when she visited Spain, and was fascinated by the churros spinkled with cinnamon sugar or dipped in hot chocolate. Churros were like a part of their everyday life.
After being inspired, she returned to Singapore and experimented with more creative versions of red velvet and pandan churros, then found the courage to set up a stall at a pasar malam.
The instagrammable treat became a hit, and they started out being a regular fixture at the different bazaars.
Crystal also came up with everything from the logo, branding to the packaging – a very hands-up student-boss.
Going through the process allowed the owners to make mistakes without high overheads and rental cost, and worked towards creating products that Singaporean youth loved. That eventually led to this permanent, physical food kiosk, after more than 100 pop-ups over 3 years.
Loco Loco focuses on local fusion finger food, with Churros as the main seller.
They are available in 5 flavours – Original ($4.90), Oreo ($5.50), Ondeh Ondeh ($5.50), Chilli Crab ($5.90) and Salted Egg Yolk Churros ($5.90).
The sweet versions come with a choice of chocolate, caramel, gula Melaka or white chocolate sauce.
A Churros Platter ($16.00) meant for four pax can be ordered for your next gathering or party.
I was surprised that all churros were made fresh on-the-spot from scratch, as a large majority of other places I saw use pre-packed ones. Therefore, be prepared to wait a while (say 5 to 10 minutes), especially during peak hours.
Compared to Churros that are what I am familiar to – fluffy and airy, Loco Loco’s signature is cake-ier and denser.
I find the Ondeh Ondeh ones sprinkled with freshly grated coconut and drizzled with gula Melaka sauce working well – an interesting blend of Spanish and traditional Indonesian / Malay culture.
NEW on the menu are Chicken ($5.50) and Beef Scotch Eggs ($5.90) complete with semi-runny egg yolk in the middle when cut apart.
I preferred the chicken version, though I found it slightly on the plain side. The added Peking Duck Sauce helped.
The main feedback I had was that the prawn crackers given together with the Scotch Eggs might not have worked as well as expected, and could turn soggy in a take-away box.
For a thirst quencher, you know it… Loco Loco also offers Thai Milk Tea and Green Milk Tea ($2.50 for small, $4.00), freshly-brewed using the famous “Number One Brand” Cha Tra Mue tea leaves.
