Maybe some people will hate me for divulging their ‘hidden’ coffee spot. But anyway, good news (and good coffee) spreads sooner or latter.
Coffee Break, which is located at Amoy Food Centre and Science Park, has expanded with its 3rd outlet at GSH Plaza – a short walk away from Raffles Place MRT station.
However, people do not usually take the escalator up (there is Kaisen Tei here by the way) and walk all the way to the back.
So here it is. The crowd here seems manageable before 12:00pm. All peaceful and quiet.
Come lunch time, it is an entirely different battle-story all together where CBD workers are likely to throng the place down for its affordable sock-brewed coffee and kaya toasts with unique fillings.
Coffee Break is now helmed by siblings Faye, Anna and Jack Sai who took over their father’s stall at Amoy Street. Faye was ‘standing guard’ here. (Their grandfather also owned a coffee shop called San Hai Yuan more than 80 years ago.)
Many customers come for their flavoured kopi, from Almond, Almond Ginger, Black Sesame, Ginger, Taro Milk, Mint, Melon Milk, Masala and Mango Milk ($3.80 for hot or iced versions).
One of their best sellers is the Sea Salt Caramel Latte ($4.80 for hot or iced version), which I agree can be interesting to drink with slight sweet and salty notes along with the coffee-bitterness.
Another version I tried recently was the Almond Ginger. While Singaporeans should be familiar with Teh Halia (ginger in tea), I found having ginger In coffee worked as well, for that light burst of spice, especially comforting in an iced version.
Other than the sweet toasts with funky fillings of Rum & Raisin, Earl Grey Crème, and Key Lime Crème ($3.50), and too bad Matcha Coconut was sold out, Savoury Toasts are offered just at this outlet.
You can expect Ham & Cheese, Tuna Mayo and Egg Paprika.
Even though Faye mentioned behind the counter that the Egg Paprika was her creation, I thought that the fillings were not pronounced enough, and the paprika was kind of subdued.
Also the toast came rather flaccid, and I would rather have something crisper.
To cater to the lunch crowd, Bentos of Beef Rendang Nasi Goreng ($9.00), Butter Chicken Briyani ($9.00), Curry Chicken Briyani ($9.00) and Sambal Chicken Mee Goreng ($8.80) are also available.
Quick tip: come slightly before lunch time.
