MediaCorp actresses Felicia Chin and Sora Ma are owners of The Mama Shop, so don’t be surprised if you spot one of them serving your Ipoh coffee and slushies.
The retro-themed snack bar is slightly ulu, located in one of Singapore’s heritage buildings – the Old Police Operational Headquarters at Pearl’s Hill Terrace.
An unconventional choice of venue to set up a café. We spot a law firm, a salad delivery shop, a florist and The Influencer Network as neighbours. How do you even get here? It is probably a 15 minute walk uphill from Chinatown MRT.
Overheard, “I won’t dare to come here alone at night.”
We liked the old school vibes, with a section dedicated to childhood titbits of Xiao Ding Dang and Ken-Ken. The café sells a selection of burgers, waffles, satay, snacks, and drinks such as Ipoh style kopi and sparkling limau.
Perhaps we went during a wrong timing, the chirpy friendly server told us the cakes had not arrived, hot desserts were out, the satay would be ready in an hour, the Mama Curry Pie was sold out, the kopi machine was down so there was only 3-in-1.
They recommended the Messy Messy Nice Nice Mama Burger ($10.90). New Zealand beef patty was used, topped with melted Gouda Cheese, and mushroom. For the side accompaniment, there were those UF0-shaped snacks (What do you call that again?).
The burger somehow reminded me of… MCD’s cheese burger! Or how they used to taste when I was growing up.
Overheard again, “The price not quite Mama Shop right?”
I was actually okay with the price-point. And yes, I preferred the Otah Roll ($7.90), created using rather thick slab of Muar Otah drizzled with a mayo-like slightly spicy sauce.
The experience was quite out of the usual, with parts reminding me of my childhood. Location and vibes were indeed nostalgic, added with music played from an actual turntable. I suspect people do not come all the way here purely for the food, as the items tasted like things quickly assembled at home for a fast lunch. So…
Anyway, Felicia and Sora, if you are reading this, great work with your shows. I mean it.
