Looking for a Korean restaurant to ’jio’ your friends to? Seoul Jjimdak has just opened at City Square Mall Level 5, specialising in Jjimdak, Army Stew and other Korean side dishes. The best part is, prices are affordable for its quantity and quality. Daebak!
Jjimdak is largely a sharing dish which originated from Andong, made with chicken and various vegetables marinated in a spicy Korean ganjang (soy sauce) based sauce.
Seoul Jjimdak signature ($33.90) is a pot of generous portions of braised succulent chicken (available with bones or boneless), potatoes, carrots, onions, dried chillis and with chewy glass potato noodles, great for sharing between 2 to 4 people.
You can choose to top-up with single portions of Prawn & Mussels ($5.90), Assorted Mushroom ($4.90), Ramyeon ($2.90), Mozzarella Cheese ($2.90) and Tteokbokki ($2.90).
My favourite parts were the sweet carrots and soft chunky potatoes, which integrated well with the spicy-savoury sauce.
I have tried a few different brands of Jjimdak before, and Seoul’s Jjimdak’s version had a more soupy form, great for slurping up the noodles, suitable for those who like your food ’zup zup’ (with more gravy).
What’s great is that individual portion – a “Mini” Boneless Jjimdak ($12.90) is available for those crave for a smaller portion.
Feedback wise, I thought that the chicken pieces could have been braised longer for the flavours to penetrate in further.
I personally preferred the Army Stew ($33.90) between the two main ‘stars’.
Seoul Jjimdak’s take is probably one of my favourites available in Singapore for its slurp-worthy homemade kimchi stew base and price.
Their Budae Jjigae was almost exploding with ingredients of luncheon meat (happy there was quite a lot in proportion), pork belly strips, assorted vegetables, baked beans and tofu, and do go for a Ramyeon ($2.90) top-up for a more satisfying treat.
Some stews could be tilted to the sour, spicy or diluted side, I thought this Budae Jjigae had everything coming well together.
The soup was mildly thick with a lingering of baked bean taste, and the kimchi deliciously and just moderately spicy.
Other favourite Korean dishes available include Japchae ($12.90), Chicken Bulgogi Ramyeon ($11.90), Cold Noodles ($10.90), Ramyeon with Kimchi Soup ($10.90) and sides of Seafood Pancake ($14.90), Kimchi Pancake ($10.90), Spicy Cheese Ttekobokki ($11.90), Steamed Egg ($9.90) and Kimchi Cheese Fries ($6.90).
One other thing to highlight about Seoul Jjimdak is its wallet-friendly prices.
If you come between 11:30am to 5:00pm, you can enjoy “Seoul Value Meals” priced between $9.90 and $12.90 with come with a free drink worth $2.50.
