Paik’s Coffee – Cheap, Big Cups Of Korean Coffee at Tiong Bahru Plaza

Three words to describe Korea’s Paik’s Coffee – Cheap, Big, (maybe) Delicious.

The Korean Coffee chain has just opened both Paik’s Bibim and Paik’s Coffee at the revamped Tiong Bahru Plaza Level 2 food street.

The chain is actually owned by Korean celebrity chef Jong Wan PAIK, who is also behind Korean BBQ concept Bornga.

If you have been to Seoul Korea, Paik’s Coffee chain is almost EVERYWHERE, known to serve both cheap and fashionable drinks. How difficult to achieve.

Low priced coffee are quite a big thing in Seoul, and you are likely to find shops such as Ediya, CU (in convenience chains) and McCafe going for both lower pricing and generous servings.

Paik’s Coffee is distinctive from the rest of the Korean coffee chains in terms of price point, 15cm tall cup size and the bright colours.

A cup of Iced Americano is priced at $3 whereas a cup of Iced Latte at $4, cheaper than other coffee chains.

Size wise, at approximately 500ml a cup (that’s half a litre!).

I had both the recommended Iced Americano ($3) and Paik’s Original Coffee ($3.50) and preferred the former. It reminded me of an upsized cup of kopi o kosong peng. To my foreign friends, that is iced black coffee without sugar.

Perhaps it has something to do with my conscious bid to cut down sugar, the Paik’s Original Coffee ($3.50) was a tad syrupy-sweet for me. Though I figure most younger people would find the sweetness-level just right.

The only food item available was a miserable looking Sausage Bun ($3.50) filled with creamy corn.

For better taste, I took some gochujang sauce from Paik’s Bibim (the bottle was left on the table by the way) and that made a whole lot of difference.

Tiong Bahru getting even more hip, yah?
