WHEAT continues to be my go-to place for Japanese and Asian style salads, which by the way has opened another branch at Raffles City Basement 1.
Folks around City Hall, you know where to get your healthy greens now.
Some may wonder why the salad shop is also called “Wheat Baumkuchen”.
When the owners first started out (at Toa Payoh Central), they actually sold locally-made baumkuchen as the main signature, with soba on the side as a way to diversify the menu.
After their outlet at One Raffles Place, the soba noodle, brown rice and salad sets eventually became so popular among CBD executives, the shop decided to focus on these healthy eats.
Compared to other salad shops you may be familiar with, WHEAT’s differentiating factors include its attention on noodles such as green soba, shirataki and ramen; Japanese-inspired sauces of yuzu, sesame and teriyaki; and most noodle items are actually $10 or less (with the exception of more premium ones such as barramundi, salmon sashimi and striploin).
If you do not know what to pick, the Top Three Popular items are the Grilled Salmon Soba ($10), Bull Run ($8) and Penguin ($8). More on that.
Salmon Soba ($10.00, add on $1 for egg)
492 kcal. WHEAT’s most popular item is grilled salmon fillet with soba. It is not difficult to understand why.
Quite a huge slab of fresh, sweet salmon on soba tossed in a specially made Japanese sauce (I suspect there is some yuzu within). The soba which is imported from Japan, has a chewier texture than the usual cold noodles.
Bull Run ($8.00)
479 kcal. There is no ‘bull’ in Bull Run – it is teriyaki chicken with soba. The name is said to be inspired by Shenton Way when it was launched at the Raffles Place shop.
For those who need more ‘taste’ in your food, the teriyaki chicken pieces which are kind of similar to what you get in the casual Japanese restaurants, should provide you with that.
The cold dish may get some getting used to, but the sauce tasty, and portion actually filling and satisfying.
Penguin ($8.00)
456 kcal. Said to be the OL popular dish – green soba noodles with shredded chicken, fried eggs, quail eggs, Japanese cucumber mixed in roasted sesame sauce.
The overall combination is refreshingly oishii, and lightest in taste when compared to the other two.
Again, no ‘penguin’ in this this. Some salads are called Penguin, Sea Gull, Reindeer, Polar Bear and Whale, named after animals living in the cold climate as the shop offered cold Japanese noodles.

Striploin Salad ($15.00)
276 kcal. For the gym-goers, you can get your protein from this Striploin Steak Salad with sesame sauce (there is a soba noodle option as well).
Request for the sauce to be placed at the side, as I found the beef slices flavourful enough to eat on their own.
Barramundi Salad ($11.90)
298 kcal. Turned out to be one of my new favourites – fried barramundi belly salad.
The accompany sauce had a spicy Sriracha met fruity-tangy taste which complemented well with the fish.
Lava ($7.80)
457 kcal. Something different if you need a dish that is more fulling – ramen with curry chicken, sweet carrots, soft potatoes and lava egg.
Reindeer ($7.80)
377 kcal. The no-meat version, with soba, wakame, bunashimeiji, and edamame.
Bull’s Eye ($8.90)
494 kcal. The rice served at WHEAT contains 50% brown rice, and 50% red rice.
Red rice includes a nutty flavour, along with a higher nutritional value. The combination is said to provide higher amounts of fibre, iron and zinc.
Quinoa($12.00)
373 kcal. Quinoa with grilled chicken leg. The quinoa includes some cranberries which give it a sweeter touch.
Good to know: If you are a regular, you may notice the packaging is different. WHEAT now uses 100% biodegradable sugar cane fiber boxes to contain their salads.
WHEAT has also just been approved by the Health Promotion Board HPB as Healthier Dining Partner.
That means ALL their food items from salads, noodles and rice bowls are BELOW 500 CALORIES. Jeng jeng jeng.
