We were piped up, but got lost navigating through the constellation map of ulu Science Park, with buildings named after the various horoscopes.
Our task: Find the Gemini, the building where The Pipe District is located, amongst all the other ‘stars’.
The Pipe District is a ‘pipe-themed’ restaurant serving modern European dishes along with Archipelago Beers.
The interior stays true to its name – repurposed furniture pieces from pipes, wood pallets, container walls. Industrial looking and thematic. (And that made us miss our secondary school Technical classes.)
Dishes were also presented on various industrial tableware such as wooden chopping boards and aluminium mess tins. None were rusty.
A total of 10 interesting flavours are available for the Chicken Wings, affordable at $10 for 8pcs.
Salted Egg Butter (the current trend), Wasabi Mayo and Chilli Crab Style (support local!) are some of the recommended flavours.
Served in a mess tin that reminded the guys at our table of outfield days in the army (bleah… sian half), the wings were served with scallion and curry leaves similar to those in some tze char stalls.
The batter golden brown in colour had crispy and crunchy skin, beautifully coated with distinct salted egg sauce. Meaty but could be a tad salty though.
Their Charcoal Fish & Chips caught our attention with the orh-lu-lu (black) surface with a feel of the mining industry.
Served with either sweet potato fries or normal fries at no additional charges, different choices of fish were available.
A Seafood Bucket ($24) was good for sharing for 2-3 persons, Dory Fish priced at $12, Scottish Salmon at $16 and Atlantic Cod at $18.
Thinly battered with a slight crunch, the stark colour contrast between the batter and the fish made an interesting combination.
The fish could be a thinner than usual but considered reasonable at the price of $12 for a set of Fish & Chips in today’s context.
We loved the creative Charcoal Battered Onion Rings ($3) that fits the industrial theme. Other sides dishes were also reasonably priced between $3 and $6.
Even though the location could be a little inconvenient, The Pipe District with a distinct industrial theme for interior and interestingly varied dishes, matched with affordability was attractive enough.
As customers, we also hope to see more innovative items, which are hopefully in the pipeline. Pun intended.
