Sharing the same doors as Bitters and Love is Free the Robot, serving western-style brunch food and coffee in the CBD area. Telok Ayer, that is.
With a huge white wooden wall covering up the most part of the cafe, it is almost hard to tell that a cafe is indeed in operations behind that wall.
Through a nondescript door, a small and dim cafe of wooden tables and benches fills up the space. Talk about hole-in-the-wall.
A rather popular item on the menu, the Sous Vide Egg with Jamon, Truffle and a slice of brown bread ($5) makes a satisfying appetizer, with the truffle being strong and aromatic.
Truffle fries at $3?
Quite surprised by its price tag; a serving of truffle fries can cost up to double or triple its price at the usual cafe. To be fair, the fries served to us did not come with a generous amount of truffle in them, but the truffle was distinct enough.
We say: worth it (if you do not mind chemical-flavoured fries.)
Turned out that the coconut in the Free the Robot Signature – Coconut, Espresso, Milk ($6) was actually a layer of coconut oil set afloat on the usual milk + espresso. Would have much preferred the coconut to be infused into the coffee instead.
Fancy some Fresh Juice ($5.5)? The Single Origin Cold Brew ($7) comes in such a bottle as well.
From the mains, we were recommended the Free the Robot Burger ($12), a homemade beef burger with sunny side up egg, pickles, tomato, melted cheese and bacon.
Surprisingly, the burger did not disappoint – the beef patty was moist and juicy, and the burger as a whole was rather satisfying.
Among the three sandwiches we had, our favourite was definitely the seemingly simple Avocado Pesto Toastie ($7) made of grilled feta and cheddar cheese, homemade pesto and baby spinach between slices of toast. We especially loved the combination of cheese and pesto here.
Great for a breakfast sandwich.
Surf & Turf Meatballs ($7.5) – mozzarella, tomato, basil on homemade brioche. Compared to the chicken meatballs, these prawn and pork meatballs are much firmer, but they have an acquired taste to them.
With such affordable prices and comfort food, there is no doubt why Free the Robot has already gained a steady stream of regulars.
Check out their cute “mascot”, Baileys the dog on Fridays and Saturdays. He is quite the instagrammers’ favourite.
