”Oh My Goodness! All Bacon? Seriously?” That were our first thoughts when we heard of this bacon-centric Oh My Bacon café opening at Dunlop Street.
While the idea of having everything with bacons may be daunting, it will be a piece of heaven for bacon lovers out there.
Bacon starters, bacon mains, bacon desserts, bacon ice cream, bacon beverages (not quite yet).
The interior of the place is warm and cozy, with a homely feel. Wooden chairs, comfy sofa, cute pillows and tote bags hanging on the walls, just like what my room looks like (when it is neat).
Apart from selling edible bacons, other inedible bacon-inspired merchandises are up for sale too.
They even have a bacon mascot on their merchandises! Imagine hugging a bacon mascot to sleep, it may probably be soaked with saliva the very next morning. Okay, eeeee.
We were recommended the Bacon Bomb ($28), Carbonara ($15), Jekyll & Hyde ($2.50 for 1, $12 for 6) and Bacon Ice Cream ($5).
Non- bacon dishes were also available but since we were in a bacon- centric café, we wanted to go full-on with the bacon dishes.
The Bacon Bomb ($28) was a combination of pork, beef, bacon and cheese, supposedly to create a bombastic impression. It looked like a gigantic ngoh hiang (minced pork roll) with all the mashed-up tender meats, but the lack of cheese filling makes the bomb dry.
Not too much of an explosion of sensation as claimed.
The Bacon Jam Session ($12) came with whiskey infused bacon jam and a toasted baguette. The sweet and savory taste of the jam was pretty addictive, and we ended up licking it clean even when there’s not enough baguette for dipping.
The Carbonara ($15) came in a reflective metallic mini wok and people went “Aiyo… Very reflective and shiny. Difficult to take pictures.” #FirstWorldProblems #InstagrammerWoes
This so-called Italian version slightly different from the usual carbonara – not as creamy, more eggy and ‘raw’ and should please those who fancy a lighter version.
We were somehow more interested in the savoury dessert, the Bacon Ice Cream ($5) with encompassing bacon bits.
The Jekyll & Hyde ($2.50 for 1, $12 for 6) on the other hand came in 2 flavors: Dark chocolate or white chocolate. On its own, the bacon strips actually tasted like our bak kwa (barbequed pork).
The white chocolate was preferred – sweeter, tastier and more unique than the dark version.
The Bacon Brownie ($4.50) came with an option to top up with Vanilla ice cream ($8) or Bacon ice cream ($9). Once you go bacon, you cannot go back.
The brownie was too rich and chocolatey that the heatiness level could have hit the rooftop. Bacon bits were found within the brownie but the overpowering chocolate masked the entire taste.
OMB. A unique café offering something different from cafes offering the normal brunch items. No doubt with an identity, some bacon dishes stood out more than the others whereas others were pretty ordinary.
Will this bacon shine like a beacon in today’s café scene?
