Sydney’s Luxe Brand has opened a café at Keong Siak Street, and I fell in love with the interior immediately. So fond of it then I texted my Australian travel mates immediately, “Look at this. Don’t be envious.”
Contemporary, clean, woody, wide spaces, the space exhibited the ‘Aussie café’ vibes for a noon of laidback coffee-drinking. If I could own a place, a house, I hope it can look like Luxe.
Luxe first started as a hole-in-the-wall at Bondi, and Singapore makes its first overseas outlet.
Its Head-chef Chui Lee Luk is actually Singapore-born, and this makes a home-coming of sorts. With experience at Claude’s and with Kylie Kwong, Chef Chui promises modern Australian cuisine with a Southeast Asian twist. But of course.

The brunch items were quite ‘Aussie’ – Almond Milk Chia Seed Pudding ($9), Luxe MapleNut Granola ($16), Toasted Artisan Breads ($9) and Merryberry Ricotta Hotcakes ($20). How many places you know add chia seeds to their puddings here? But it is commonplace down under. Coffee is from Toby’s Estate.
Though I can imagine people saying items can be limited, and pricey.
The Luxe Hanger Steak Burger ($24) is a beauty. We would recommend the lunch set that comes with dessert, coffee AND wine at $35. (Having red for lunch is totally not my thing, but since it comes in the set …)
The Steak Burger was absolutely delicious – soft black sesame bun with tender medium rare slices of beef that could set some hearts racing at its sight.
A Fennel Sausage Roll was what I crave for at Surry Hill’s Bourke Street Bakery, and looking at it surface on the menu made me order it despite that I ALREADY had a full meal.
Didn’t regret it at all.
The dish would take 20-25 minutes to prepare as the kitchen would make the pastry only on the spot. That also meant when it arrived, the Pork and Fennel Sausage Roll ($18) was full-on and hot with buttery crust, revealing juicy sweet pork fillings as you take a big bite down.
Dessert was Pandan Madeleines with Coconut Curd ($8) that tasted more like kaya.
One thing we realised that there were no seats for individuals or pairs, with the smallest table meant for 6-8. Otherwise, Luxe could rank as one of my favourite cafe space this year.
