Madame Ooze – NEW Croissant Ice Cream Cafe Hidden In A Boutique Hostel At Chinatown

The travel and hospitality industry took a hit due to Covid-19 including Adler Hostel, a boutique hostel located along Chinatown.

Instead, they converted their living room at the ground floor into a cafe, serving ice cream and pastries.

Madame Ooze is the newest concept store opened within Adler Hostel.

The 20-seater is colourful and vibrant, well-equipped with comfy sofa seats, tables and chairs just like a living room.

There are also huge mirrors, hanging paintings and potted plants that add a botanical touch.

What you can expect include Ice Cream (Single $4.20, Double $8, Triple $11), Croissant ($4.50), Cinnamon Bun ($2.50), Coffee (from $3), Tea ($6.50) and Bubbly ($6).

While Madame Ooze may not be Muslim-owned, the service staff there during my visit are Muslims, who also mentioned that the ingredients used are Halal-certified.

Their signature item is their Croissant with Ice Cream, which created an oozy effect due to the temperate difference and thus the name – Madame Ooze.

7 ice cream flavours (Single $4.20, Double $8, Triple $11) are available, categorised into “Normal” and “Premium” flavours (+$0.50) on their menu.

These include Salted Caramel, Belgian Dark Chocolate, New York Blueberry Cheesecake and Madagascan Vanilla whereas premium flavours (+$0.50) are Sicilian Pistachio, Kyoto Hojicha and Kyoto Matcha.

One complimentary topping such as chocolate chips or freeze-dried raspberries/ mandarin orange is given for each croissant and ice cream combo order.

Customers can also opt for the Mandarin Orange Dark Chocolate Sauce at an additional $2.50.

I must say that each scoop of ice cream is huge and generous, sandwiched between the warm croissant, before sprinkling some icing sugar on top as a finishing touch.

Even though the matcha was smooth and creamy with slight lingering bitterness, it lacked the earthly profile of a good matcha.

The Hojicha flavour was the better of the two, fragrant with scent of roasted tea leaves and creamy at the same time.

I liked that the croissant was toasted before serving to give it a light crisp.

The croissant was light and flaky, giving a textural contrast to the creamy ice cream and a good balance between the warm croissant and cold ice cream.

Three Bubbly ($6) are available on their menu: Salted Plum, French Lavender and Rose, with tonic water added to the respective syrup to give it a fizzy sensation.

The Rose Bubbly ($6) wasn’t what I expected, more on the sour side, and could do with more floral fragrance.

For a light bite, Cinnamon Bun ($2.50) was available too and served warm.

Personally, it was a tad too dense for me, with a chewy texture and slightly crispy on the outside due to the cinnamon sugar coated over.

Madame Ooze is an ideal place with comfy sofa seats to chill and grab some ice cream when you are in the Chinatown area.
