Is it a trend for new ice cream bars to open till 2am?
Open till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, I See Cream has joined the latest trend for ice cream bars such as Haute And Cauld, Hay Gelato and Salted Caramel Artisan Ice Cream (Upper Thomson outlet) which opens till 2am.
The newest addition to Thomson V Two at Upper Thomson, the humble-looking cafe literally pronounced as “ice cream” when you read it quickly.
While Upper Thomson has popular cafes such as Columbus Coffee Co. and Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, those at Thomson V Two are considered more off-the-radar.
It has seen its fair share of tenants changing over the past few years, with its location slightly off the beaten track.
Taking over the space of a nail art salon at Upper Thomson V Two, the 22 seaters (8 indoors, 14 outdoors) space at I See Cream has a simplistic interior, decked in grey and white. (Note that while the opening hours stated 11am, do check with them as it opened at 11:30am when I visited.)
The first thing that caught my attention is their gelato display, and it was my first-time seeing gelato trays in different shapes and sizes. (Would the OCD peeps get uncomfortable?)
There were 12 gelato flavours available when I visited, such as premium flavours ($5 per scoop, $20 per pint) of Pistachio, Valrhona Dark Chocolate, Lychee Raspberry, Coconut, Yuzu, and Biscoff.
Other special flavours ($4 per scoop, $16 per pint) included Mango, White Peach Yogurt, Soursop, Blueberry, Rock Melon and Chocolate Chip.
I noticed that 8 out of 12 flavours were all fruit-based, all in the form of gelatos without sorbets for the lactose-intolerant.
The single scoop of Biscoff Gelato ($5) was served with Herb & Spice infused Belgian Waffle ($3.50) and edible Gold flakes were added as a nice finishing touch.
Made using bits of Lotus Biscoff biscuits, it added a firmer bite to the smooth, creamy and sticky texture of the gelato, adding some malty sweetness to the overall taste.
The mini Herb & Spice infused Belgian Waffle on the other hand had a certain resemblance to the herbs-infused cones (Such as those at Birds Of Paradise, Monarchs & Milkweed Gelato, Gelato Labo, SugarTree Gelato and Bread & Butterfly, except in the form of a waffle.)
While the herbs used in the waffles are not specified on their menu, it has a distinct “Christmas-ey” cinnamon taste to it, which complemented well with the Biscoff gelato and reminded me of a Gingerbread Man.
Unfortunately, I won’t say that I am a fan of their waffles – being moist, denser and chewier similar to those from neighbourhood confectioneries.
I would love to see a sorbet version of their Lychee Raspberry as the gelato version I ordered wasn’t as fruity and refreshing as I expected.
With many eateries located along Upper Thomson road, it is nice to see more cafes opening till late to cater to the supper crowd.
