Once upon a time, there were The Daily Scoop, Island Creamery, Udders and Tom’s Palette which saw us through our studying years. (Working years for some.)
The Daily Scoop started in 2004 at Sunset Way. That branch was ulu, and therefore I actually had a couple of dates there. Those years were the era when locally-made local-flavoured ice cream was all in the rage.
Fast forward years later, while Italian gelato, Korean and Japanese soft serve are IN instead, these ice cream shops still hold a place in our hearts.
The Daily Scoop just opened at SOTA. They figured that talented art students need ice cream in their lives. (But Nookie and Milk Cow nearby.)
If you need to know, Cha Earl Grey, Kookie Monster, Nutty Macadamia, Simply Chocolate, Lychee Martini, Maple Crisp, Salted Mr Brown, Surprising Coconut, Strawberry Shortcake and Mao Shan Wang are their top 10 flavours. Single scoop $3.80, double scoop $6.80, 400g tub $12.50.
A reminder: Young SOTA kids, don’t take the alcoholic flavours.
Their baked waffles and chocolate brownie ($4.00) are not the best around, as people have moved on to fresher, bigger and more expensive buttermilk ones.
Oh well. That’s all right.
(By the way, the following was the first post I wrote about The Daily Scoop. My goodness. I have changed quite a bit over the last 5 years. But anyway…)
“Imagine sitting at a little cafe away from the cityscape. The rain just stopped and you were just looking out of the window at the drops trickling down. Lovers and small families sat around square white tables, just enjoying the quiet moment and a scoop of their favourite flavours of ice cream.
You wondered at your two scoops of ice cream – Lychee Martini and Strawberry Shortcake – White, pink, sweet and childlike yet with a tinge of mischief.
The bite of Lychee Martini was sorbet-y and creamy with bits of lychee lingering in your tongue. It reminded you of childhood days when you were scooping canned lychees with syrup, and also the partying days when you did not want to get too drunk.
You also watched the ice cream being churned in front of your very eyes. Cherry Brandy, Passion Pinada, Banana Fantasy, Unusually Apple, Kahlua Krunch and Bailey’s Choc Chip all wanted to make you fall in love with them.
It just made you enjoy the simplest things in life. So what if your best friends Ben & Jerry were not around…”
