Once in a while, there are some hidden gems that go completely off-the-radar. In this case there is Cosmo Restaurant & Wine Bar found right in the heart of downtown Singapore at Orchard Road.

Cosmo Restaurant & Wine Bar is an understated new establishment located at Forum The Shopping Mall, where California Pizza Kitchen used to be.

(Look out for the DFD exclusive promo: 2X 5-Course Chef’s Set Menu at $72++, and 4X Chef’s Set Menu at $128++. More details at the end of the post.)

(Click PLAY for video highlights of COSMO Restaurant & Wine Bar.)

It offers a modern European take on classic cosmopolitan dishes using premium ingredients to create culinary indulgences.

Not to be outdone in its offerings, the trendy wine bar boasts a stellar line up of over 70 wines, plus beers and spirits. (Prices are kept inexpensive as well, I saw that a Marrenon Chardonnay Les Grains is priced at $40++ per bottle, Oyster Bay Sauvignon Blanc at $55++ per bottle.)

What completes the picture is a jazz vocal performance every Wednesday to Saturday nights.

Imagine having some Joue De Boeuf, a glass of fine wine, listening to a jazz singer belt out Ella Fitzgerald while watching the world go by (along with those Christmas lights outside during December).

The concept of Cosmo is a complete, seamless wine-and-dine experience at accessible prices. The culinary team has designed a menu ensuring that mains, bar bites, and wine complement each other in taste and quality.

Renowned Chef Instructor and Personal Chef, Chef de Cuisine Michele Ow now helms Cosmo, bringing along her conspicuous passion for cooking.

Chef Michele’s winning formula is passion + natural flavours = perfect dish. For her, great food can bridge people together, create friendships and build closer relationships.

As for her food philosophy, it is centred on freshness, that’s why all dishes are cooked-to-order using ingredients that are made in-house from scratch. Presented as a set menu, or a la carte for more flexibility in choices.

Experience the many tastes of European cuisine at Cosmo, including a number of French-inspired dishes in terms of cooking technique. Here are some of Cosmo’s dishes you should definitely try:

Beignets de Crabe ($20)
These appetizing crab cakes are handmade with an array of Mediterranean flavours, shaped and pan-fried until crisp.

Made using Blue Swimmer Crabs (a.k.a. Blue Manna Crabs or simply Blue Crabs), highly prized for its sweet meat, these Beignets de Crabe is a good hot appetizer to pair with the Chef Signature Salad to start your meal.

It is served on a red pepper relish, a refreshingly spicy side-kick to the cake. Also, it comes topped with a lava egg that will beautifully cascade and run over the crunchy crab cake once pierced.

Joue De Boeuf ($28)
This hearty beef dish is prepared using beef cheek (Joue de Boeuf) stewed in red wine to soak up its tannins for that deep, rounded flavour.

The braised-tender chunk of meat is laid on a truffle-flavoured mash, then topped with slivers of green onion and sautéed slices of velvety field mushroom.

The dainty garnishing of edible flowers adds a elegance to the rich and heavier dish, making it both palate and picture-perfect.

Chef Signature BBQ Pork Rib ($28)
Do not miss these slow-cooked prime pork ribs with its fall-off-the-bone tenderness.

Lavishly basted in a homemade BBQ sauce that’s made from scratch using select quality ingredients, the ribs are then oven roasted to just the right temperature for that optimum doneness.

This Chef Signature BBQ Pork Rib is served with buttered seasonal vegetables, a vibrant accompaniment to these mouth-watering ribs.

One of the dishes in the line-up that go well with a full-bodied red wine.

Confit de Canard ($32)
Confit de Canard is a French duck leg slow cooked at a low temperature in its own duck fat.

This French cooking technique results in a duck leg that is crisp on the outside, with its skin becoming deep caramelised brown in colour.

The duck leg is served over a parsnip purée and drizzled with a tart berry balsamic glaze. Adding a contrasting texture to the crunch is a creamy truffle pâté, topped on the duck as a finishing touch.

Salmon ($18)
One of your 2 options from the Sous Vide Corner, the 50° Sous Vide Salmon is a must-try for seafood loving gourmands.

There is a certain level of food geekery in cooking sous vide, where the salmon is cooked vacuum sealed in bag, immersed in a water bath at exactly 50°.

The result? A salmon that’s consistently moist, juicy and tender, no matter how many times you order it.

Enjoy this dish with a topping of crunchy fennel salad and a swirling of balsamic reduction.

Seared Hokkaido Scallop ($28)
Japan meets Russia in this hot appetizer, with sashimi-grade scallops from Hokkaido, Japan seared in high heat to lock in its natural juices.

It takes technical expertise and precision to cook these scallops perfectly, with the centre still sheer and translucent.

It is topped with Russian caviar as a touch of indulgence to this seafood delicacy.

Chef’s Signature Porcini Cappuccino ($8)
This starter-in-a-coffee cup is a delightful surprise as this Chef Signature “cappuccino” is actually a soup, not a java beverage.

A rich, earthy soup made with sautéed porcini mushrooms and transformed into a creamy bisque.

For that essential “cappuccino” froth, the soup is capped with a truffle-infused foam, and finished off with a dusting of truffle zest and sheared chives for that added fragrance.

Chef Signature Salad ($12)
A pleasing assemblage of piquant arugula leaves, chunks of sweet pear, walnut pieces, and crumbed cheese.

What makes this salad extra special is the addition of homemade fumée salmon, applying the French cooking method of smoking to fillets of Norwegian salmon.

A drizzling of French dressing – a classic vinaigrette – ties everything together for a final touch.

Pasta of the Day ($16)
Where else in town can you find hand-made pasta for just $16?

The Carbonara I had, using freshly-made pasta with that pleasant soft bite, was cooked al dente in smooth creamy sauce and egg.

Chef’s Recommended Set Menu ($38)
Another special highlight which I discovered after re-visiting was the Chef’s “Omakase”, priced at a super wallet-friendly $38++ only.

The 5-course meal for me includes tasting portions of Foie Gras, Porcini Cappuccino, Sous Vide “Chicken”, Joue De Boeuf, and Dessert of the Day – which was Crème Brulee made in-house. Note: Items rotate regularly.

You can be sure it would be a filling meal, making it suitable for dinner dates and group outings. (Reservation for the Set Menu is highly recommended as some items may run out.)

Reservations and corporate bookings are accepted. So whether you are wine-and-dining for business or leisure, you can choose from any of their indoor, outdoor and private dining areas as your preferred venue.
